There's no place like home. This statement means more now than ever to tens of thousands of families in Syria who have fled their homes as a result of the on-going conflict.

"The most difficult thing is to find ourselves away from home," said a teary young mother who wished to remain anonymous. "We don't know if our home is still standing or if it is not in rubbles like many of our neighbours' homes."

This young mother now lives with her family and 25 other people in an unfurnished home on the outskirts of Homs. They have neither running water nor electricity nor windows or doors to keep out the cold. Having just given birth to her second child, the approach of winter raises further concerns. "We have exhausted the little savings we had and now have nothing but the food we receive from the World Food Programme."

Five months ago Abu Mohamed left the war-torn neighborhood in Homs after being trapped at home with his family in the middle of crossfire. A break in the fighting allowed him to run with his wife, three children and mother. "I have not been able to go back to my home and see if it is still standing there or not; but life is more precious than property and we are safe here” said Abu Mohamed.

The shelter where Abu Mohamed and his family are staying offers daily hot meals cooked with WFP’s dry rations. “It is tasty but there is nothing like home and nothing like preparing one’s own food,” he says. “My wife is suffering but she keeps it all to herself except for few words - let’s go back home.”
